My name is Dr. Jo
Lynn Hawthorne
and I am a board certified OB/GYN turned Bariatrician. I became interested in weight loss two years ago, when I was approaching my 50th birthday. I began doing what I had been telling my patients to do for years - eat less and exercise more. Well… needless to say, the scale didn't budge. I began a quest to find out why.
Over the past two years, I have become a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians
and am soon to be Board Certified in Bariatrics. Last fall, I opened Chrysalis Weight Management, a medically supervised weight management center that emphasizes coaching as a key component to long-term health and wellness. We have done very well as a brick and mortar center.

Q. I’m just not sure I can do it.  I’ve tried everything.  How do I know this will work?

A. We know how you feel, we’ve felt that way too.  What we’ve learned is that right now, you don’t have to believe it will work.  You just have to follow the program.  In a few weeks, as you shed the weight, as you get more energy and inspiration… then you can believe.

Q.I need to lose over 100 pounds – every time I think about it, I get depressed.  Where do I start?

You start just as you do anything, with the first step.  Do you know that by simply losing 10% of your weight, you reduce your risk of disease by about 50%?  That’s exciting! You don’t have to lose all of your weight to becoming healthier. Start with focusing on losing 10-15 pounds, then when you reach that goal move on to the next one. To start off thinking about losing 100 pounds is too daunting a task for anyone!

Q.I exercise almost every day but I don’t seem to lose my extra weight.

A. That’s because you can’t lose weight through exercise alone.  A pound of fat has about 3,500 calories.  In order to burn just one pound, you’d have to run 33.8 miles.  To exercise off 30 pounds, you would have
1,040 miles, the equivalent of forty marathons.
